100 wonderbreads of the world
white bread, plastic cases, google image searches
100 wonderbreads of the world is an ongoing series of works exploring iconic figures through the medium of white bread. To be eligible to become toast, the icon must be dead, and must be iconic enough that a one-word name (of no more than 13 characters) returns an image of the icon in a google image query. 100 wonderbreads of the world begins with the banal observation that laser-etching can accomplish what previously appeared miraculous: the image of Jesus Christ on toast. The project has grown to include dozens of additional historical icons, and will be complete when one-hundred individuals have been made into toast. In this manner the project poses questions about the status of different types of information (text queries, images, cultural capital), the tendency of the internet to render individuals and social relations as images in a society of the spectacle, and the circulation of those images as commodities through various forms of reification.
At present the collection consists of 54 toasted icons. Use the following form to submit suggestions for the remaining 46.
